Intention lends focus to our purpose and provides direction for our actions (Forciea, 2007). When we are out of balance physically and/or emotionally, forming a personal healing intention can create a space for a deeper and more authentic connection with our physical and emotional selves. As multi-dimensional beings, we can also use healing intention to cultivate and strengthen the connection to our spiritual nature.
Over time, research has supported the idea of multi-dimensional human existence. The belief that humans are multi-dimensional—consisting of both physical and subtle (energetic) bodies—is at the core of holistic thinking. Further, from a health perspective, to explain what happens on the level of the whole organism is the objective of holistic medicine (Ventegodt, Andersen & Merrick, 2003).
In mind/body philosophy, the tension created by chronic anxiety and/or stress often manifests as blocked energy in specific areas of the body. This blockage occurs outside of our conscious awareness and can lead to illness and emotional suffering. In contrast, healing happens in a state of consciousness (p. 1138). Incorporating mindfulness (attention) and conscious awareness of our emotional state and associated physical reactions can guide us towards focused actions including personal healing intentions to enhance physical health and emotional wellbeing.
Steps for Writing a Healing Intention
1. Focus on the positive (Negative thought or speech energizes an issue or problem).
- Imagine feeling well, healthy, and pain free.
- Use words as if you already have what you wish. “I am pain free.”
2. Write the intention (Brings intention from non-physical world to material world).
- Write the intention on paper or by keying into a computer.
- Avoid superficial statements—be specific.
- Spend time thinking about and writing/rewriting your intention.
3. Make a deep connection with your intention.
- Breathe in your intention as you think, read, or speak of it.
- Imagine holding your intention in your body—your heart, mind, and area of the body associated with the intention.
4. Hold the intention in your consciousness each day.
- Spend time each day thinking about your intention (e.g. morning and night).
- Practice relaxation techniques, which can help maintain focus on your intention (Meditation and Guided Imagery are examples of mindfulness practices that can help maintain focus on your healing intention).
5. Practice present moment gratitude to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook.
- Find at least one positive aspect of your current issue or problem.
- Express gratitude to those who are supporting you on your healing journey.
- Celebrate your humanness and honor your unique contribution to humanity.
Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
