Not long ago someone asked me how human and animal healing touch differs. This is a great question because in some respects, there is no difference.
First, both humans and animals have an energy field – the electromagnetic field that surrounds and energetically supports the body. Like a spider web, the energy field collects data from life experiences and stores it the field. Whether human or animal, from a health and well-being perspective, this has similar significance considering the energy system holds energetic baggage from past trauma, disease, or injury. Maintaining a clear and congestion-free energy system assists the body in the healing process whether the body is human or animal.
Second, just as humans and animals have an energy field, both also have chakras – seven main chakras and a number of minor chakras located throughout the body. Each chakra represents a specific area of the physical body and integrates with the outside energy field. Chakras represent the “motor of our body. When in proper working order, the chakras assist to generate health and well-being. Alternately, illness, injury, or trauma can cause the energy field to constrict creating a lack of movement in the chakras and external energy field.
From a Healing Touch modality perspective, the theory behind healing touch for humans and animals is also much the same. Whether human or animal, a primary goal of healing touch is to bring about a higher state of relaxation, which assists in the body’s natural healing process. A body that is more relaxed, more often, functions more effectively and efficiently. For humans and animals, achieving a higher state of relaxation is beneficial for pain control, anxiety, grief, stress, illness, and injury.
Turing our focus to the differences between human and animal energy systems, what are they, and in what ways does it impact the practice of healing touch?
- The human energy field is approximately 4-6 feet away from body compared to an animal that has an energy field naturally 10 times larger, or more than the human field.
- The animal energy field is integrated into one instinctual field. The appearance is similar to that of a pixilated photo. The human field is made up of distinct layers of energy.
- In humans, the seven main chakras are located on a vertical plane, while in four legged animal’s the chakras are along a horizontal plane.
- In some aspects, the anatomy of the body differs between humans and animals.
- The dog or cat energy field may encompass their human’s energy field or intermingle with that of their person.
- Animals use their energy field (outside in) to determine whether or not to initiate the fight or flight response. Human tendency is to act using logic (inside out).
- Because of a more instinctual makeup, healing touch is useful in animals for behavior modification, training focus, euthanasia support, deepening the animal/human bond, and competition performance.
Aside from the obvious communication challenges between humans and animals, how energetic differences impact a healing touch session is mainly through technique and a general awareness of human and animal anatomic and energetic processing (instinct versus logic and integrated field versus layered field). To offer one example, because the animal energy field is more expansive, it is necessary to clearly identify where the animal’s field begins. For an animal such as a horse, the field may be quite large and energetic work may start much farther away than would be required for a human.
In the end, all differences aside, healing touch has the same ability to benefit animals as it does humans. Is your animal in need of some healing touch?

I really enjoyed your blog post Linda. What shocked me was to read that an animal has an energy field 10x larger than a human being. That is quite interesting to learn.
When we first picked up the dog from a rescue shelter and brought him home, he was quite nervous. My husband a Karuna Reiki Master sat down on the floor beside our dog and began to do Reiki on him. Before long the dog was sound asleep and woke up very relaxed. He’s a fan of Reiki but not of essential oils when we’d like to use them. So we stay with what he likes.
