Not long ago a colleague made a comment that frankly surprised me. Referring to a jacket I was wearing and had modified by adding some buttons, she said, “You are so creative!” Not a particularly newsworthy statement unless you are aware that for much of my life, I have carried a deep-seated belief that I lack creative talent. In my mind, creativity resides mysteriously deep within those “artsy” right brained types that I admire and envy. Yes! It’s true! I often feel that I neglected the creativity line when Spirit made the call!
Moving on…While it’s easy for me to make light of my tendency towards self-doubt in this area (I do admit to a good sense of humor), it’s important to recognize that others (e.g. friends, parents, colleagues, etc.) often take a different perspective from our own. While we may undervalue ourselves in any given area, others often see us as shining stars in the same area!
Using creativity as an example, what is a possible cause for the misperception of what constitutes creativity, or anything else for that matter? Limiting beliefs!
Limiting beliefs serve as subconscious filters of our reality. As a rule, we tend to see reality in a different way than others. In general, limited beliefs form out of life experience. We tend to pattern these beliefs from our environment-family, school, religious upbringing, peers, etc. In a nutshell, people view the same situation differently because our life experiences are varied and different.
To offer an example of how environment forms beliefs, consider a person who grew up immersed in the world of art and music. That individual may be bound by a very narrow definition of creativity that includes only art and music. Another individual who is encouraged to experience a variety of activities and life experiences may have a more broad definition of creativity that includes writing, problem-solving, technology, design, dance, or crafting.
The good news is we are pliable beings and don’t have to be held hostage by limiting beliefs. With a little creativity and perseverance, can’t, can turn into can! Here are a few tips for expanding one’s beliefs:
- Revisit and broaden your definition of your limited belief (e.g. creativity). Write it down.
- Talk to others about their beliefs and ideas.
- Venture outside your comfort zone by choosing an activity that challenges your beliefs.
- Write down positive affirmations. Repeat them throughout the day (e.g.”I am a creative spirit”)
- Create a vision board and place it in a location where you will see it every day.
- Use visualization or guided imagery to explore limiting beliefs.
- Use EFT® to explore negative emotions and blocked energy associated with limiting beliefs.
- Remember! “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching!”
